Johnson & Johnson launches first multifocal toric daily disposable contact lens for astigmatism and presbyopia

Johnson & Johnson announces the launch of Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism - the first and only multifocal toric daily disposable contact lens^(3) for people with astigmatism and presbyopia.

The contact lens was developed to meet the changing visual needs of people with astigmatism. It offers high wearing comfort**(2), excellent visual acuity**(2) and high stability(2) as well as clear, sharp vision at all distances and in all light conditions for presbyopic wearers**(2).

Astigmatism affects around half of all people in at least one eye, making it one of the most common visual defects. At the same time, it is estimated that up to 2.1 billion people worldwide will develop presbyopia due to age by 2030 (6). Although there are various contact lens options for people with astigmatism, around one in four wearers discontinue contact lens use within the first year - often due to blurred vision or lack of comfort (7). For people who suffer from both astigmatism and presbyopia, these challenges are even more pronounced, as the choice of suitable contact lenses has been particularly limited to date (8).

„We see a clear unmet need in the region for astigmatism and presbyopia (8), and our goal was to specifically expand our Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day portfolio to address this need,“ said Jacqueline Henderson, President, EMEA, Vision, at Johnson & Johnson. „This underscores our strong commitment to customized solutions that offer all-day comfort**,(2) clear vision**(2) and high stability (2) - even in an increasingly digital world. At the same time, we provide opticians with a comprehensive set of tools to best meet the changing needs of their wearers.“

Next generation innovation - especially for the astigmatic eye

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism has been developed with integrated personalization~,(4,9) through the pupil-optimized design and allows opticians an even more individual fit for people with astigmatism and presbyopia. The advanced design, supported by Acuvue's proven Eye Inspired Innovations, offers high comfort**,(2) clear vision**(2) and high stability(2).

Clinical data shows very good fitting performance: 93 % of wearers were successfully fitted with a maximum of two pairs of lenses. **Ϫ(11) The efficient and simplified fitting process can support a more proactive fitting strategy and help opticians to offer optimal contact lens options early on that better fit the visual and lifestyle needs of their wearers.

„Many of my wearers with astigmatism have difficulty finding a suitable contact lens. Especially when presbyopia adds an additional challenge, which starts around the age of 40 for everyone (12),“ says Preete Kumar, Professional Affairs Consultant Vision, at Johnson & Johnson. „This new innovation from Acuvue offers a customized solution for people with astigmatism and presbyopia and allows me to address the changing visual needs of my wearers - without compromise. This is an important step towards more personalized and consistent care.“

  • 95 % of wearers report clear vision during everyday activities**,(2)
  • 100 % Rotational stability ≤ 5° when blinking##,(2)
  • 92 % of wearers feel comfortable all day - even at the end of the day**++,(2)

∫ WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure if based on a number of factors (extend and nature of outdoor activities). UV-blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information.

†Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye.
