Lunor and the trend colors of New York Fashion Week

"Peach Fuzz", the trend color of 2024, should be familiar to many by now. But which shades will play a key role in the coming season? The New York Fashion Week trend report for autumn/winter 2024/2025 features natural, intense tones as well as earthy color palettes that are characterized by a successful blend of elegance and functionality.

A concept that not only matches the colors of the Black Forest eyewear manufacturer Lunor, but also corresponds to their sustainable slow eyewear principles: durability, fair production "made in Germany" and timeless designs that last for many seasons.

Rising margins and consolidation

Marcolin reports increasing margins and consolidation of the license portfolio in the first quarter of 2024. Margins are particularly positive: Adjusted EBITDA of EUR 25.7 million increased by EUR 8.5 % compared to EUR 23.7 million in the first three months of 2023. The impact on net sales was positive and amounted to EUR 17.6 % (compared to EUR 15.5 % in the same period of 2023).

Sales remained stable at EUR 145.6 million and were essentially in line with the results of the first quarter of the previous year on a comparable basis (excluding the positive effects of the new brands in 2024 and the negative effects of the brands discontinued in 2023).

Marcolin has also announced renewals with ZEGNA, GCDS, MAX&Co and Skechers and signed new exclusive license agreements with Christian Louboutin and K-Way®: Both will be launched in early 2025.

The results as at March 31, 2024 in detail

The Board of Directors of Marcolin, one of the world's leading eyewear groups, has confirmed the economic and financial results as of March 31, 2024. In the first three months of 2024, Marcolin has further consolidated its performance in line with the valuable results achieved in 2023, continuing the positive growth path of recent years despite the ongoing international situation.

There was a significant increase in terms of margins, with adjusted EBITDA at 25.7 million euros, an increase of 8.5% compared to the first quarter of 2023. The impact on net sales was positive, equal to 17.6% (compared to 15.5% for the same period last year), which is a further confirmation of the product portfolio management strategy and industry plans implemented to date.

Group net sales amounted to 145.6 million euros, a decrease of -4.4%(-3.8% at constant exchange rates) compared to the previous year. On a like-for-like basis (excluding the positive impact of the new brands in 2024 together with the negative impact of the brands discontinued in 2023), net sales were broadly in line with the previous year (-0.4% at current exchange rates, +0.3% at constant exchange rates).

Marcolin is once again one of the leading companies on the international markets: The most important geographical areas were EMEA and the Americas, which recorded sales of EUR 73.1 million (+2.2% on a like-for-like basis) and EUR 52.0 million (-7.4% on a like-for-like basis) respectively. The double-digit growth continues in a promising market such as Asia.

Net profit generated in the quarter amounted to € 7.3 million (an increase of over € 7% compared to the first quarter of 2023). The adjusted net cash position amounted to EUR 355.1 million, an increase of EUR 10.7 million compared to December 31, 2023 due to seasonal business activity, which is typical for the first quarter.

In the first months of the year, Marcolin announced significant license renewals with GCDS, ZEGNA, MAX&Co. and Skechers. The company also entered into an exclusive partnership with Christian Louboutin, making its debut in the eyewear segment for the first time in the brand's history, and with K-Way, a globally renowned brand for its revolutionary rain jackets, for which the Group will design, produce and distribute sunglasses, optical frames, ski goggles and children's eyewear proposals.

Rodenstock announces solid business results

The Rodenstock Group, global innovation leader in vision care and manufacturer of high-quality biometric ophthalmic lenses, announced its results for the 2023 financial year in mid-May. Driven by continued strong sales growth of the B.I.G. VISION® product portfolio for biometric ophthalmic lenses and the very successful market launch of MyCon lenses for children, Rodenstock increased consolidated pro forma net sales to EUR 506.1 million (2022: EUR 505.3 million on a pro forma basis).

Overall, the 2023 financial year was characterized by a challenging macroeconomic environment in which ongoing geopolitical risks with tensions in the Middle East and persistent inflation increased economic volatility. Despite these conditions, Rodenstock was able to generate EBITDA of EUR 122.3 million in 2023, an increase of 0.3% compared to the previous year on a pro forma basis.

Rodenstock's results were driven by the consistent pursuit of the B.I.G. VISION® strategy, which forms the framework for the company's transformation into a leading med-tech company and the paradigm shift in individual ophthalmic lenses. With the strong debut of MyCon lenses on the fast-growing European market, Rodenstock introduced another successful product innovation. The new lenses for children were developed to correct short-sightedness, ensure sharp vision and counteract the progression of myopia. Demand has been growing steadily since the market launch. Strong 8% sales growth of the B.I.G. VISION® biometric lens product portfolio consolidated Rodenstock's leading position in ophthalmic lenses, a continued driver of business results.

Marcus Desimoni, CEO of the Rodenstock Group, says: "2023 was another good year for Rodenstock with significant milestones. With the strong performance of our B.I.G. VISION® portfolio and strategic launches such as MyCon® lenses, we have laid the foundation for further innovation and global expansion in the future - always with a focus on customer value. This is due not least to the commitment and dedication of our entire team."

Dr. Mani Herold, CFO of the Rodenstock Group, adds: "The 2023 results confirm our stringent path as a pure med-tech company with a global presence. We are consistently implementing our strategic decisions to increase operational efficiency for long-term, sustainable growth and strong financial performance."

Red Dot Design Award again for Silhouette

This red dot is like an exclamation mark: The coveted round seal of the Red Dot Design Award competition is reserved exclusively for the best designs of their time. If you want to win over the top-class jury of experts, you have to have something outstanding to offer. Silhouette has succeeded in doing just that.

The new optical collection from the Titan Minimal Art family impressed the jury. The collection can now boast the prestigious seal of quality, which has been awarded once a year for excellent design quality since 1955.

Eyewear collection for visionaries - on earth and in space

To mark the 25th anniversary of the world-famous Titan Minimal Art design icon from Silhouette, the new collection presents itself with a dynamic, fresh, rimless look. It combines the ultimate minimalist and feather-light design with innovative details such as a new glass finishing technique and an artfully filigree nose bridge. Its fans are at home all over the world - and even in space, as the Titan Minimal Art is space-certified and has supported numerous missions as a crew member.

200,000 honey bees on the approach - Silhouette strengthens biodiversity

The fact that biodiversity is also a particularly important concern for the Silhouette Group is immediately visible and tangible at the Austrian company premises in the middle of a water conservation area. Here in Linz, a near-natural, 20,000 square meter garden has been created over time, which looks like a green oasis in the densely built-up mixed area on Ellbognerstrasse.

The lawns have developed into a rich habitat and retreat for insects, beetles, small mammals and birds. Native and site-appropriate plant species activate soil life and improve the microclimate. The garden is irrigated with three service water wells. This saves the Silhouette Group around 1.5 million liters of drinking water per year. The well water used for irrigation returns to the groundwater through the untreated soil, resulting in a closed cycle. With this garden, the Silhouette Group is sending out a clear signal that economy and biodiversity can go hand in hand.

Biodiversity on the move: 200,000 honey bees

To further strengthen biodiversity, the family-owned company has hired 200,000 new employees: Honey bees. Since May 2023, ten bee colonies have been housed in ten beehives in the near-natural garden. The bees swarm out and collect pollen within a radius of up to 500 meters. In doing so, they pollinate plants and ensure that 80 percent of all wild and crop plants reproduce. Bees therefore make a valuable contribution to biodiversity. You can even taste this diversity. The honey is a mixture of pollen from a wide variety of plants on the company premises and the surrounding area.
